Voice Over Assignment

During week 5 of my fourth trimester at SAE Institute Dubai, my class was given the task to submit a 'Voice Over' assignment by the next week. We had learned the basics of recording and mixing a voice over style advert in class based on radio show advertisements.

We used the S6 studio at SAE Institute Dubai for our recording sessions and used an RE20 microphone as this was known to be used most for broadcasting and anchor-work. Using voices.com we found different scripts for each of our assignments, which mine was based on a retirement home named "Green Gables Retirement Community". Voices for all assignment were provided by myself as I have experience being a voice actor.

After equalisation was done on protools, vocals were cut and levelled on another program known as 'Audacity' then brought back into protools for mixing and added effects. Background music used in the advertisement was taken from the apple loops library from Logic Pro X. Sound effects were added to make emphasis of mentions of pain in advertisement and taken from soundbible.com

For mixing, a 1k scoop in the mid frequencies was done to the music to allow the voice and sounds to cut through and be heard clearly. A boost in 2.98kHz was applied to the vocal narration for added presence, and heavy compression as it was taught to us how radio advertisements always sound heavily compressed, as seen below. For added radio echo effect to emphasise the title "Green Gables", a flanger and delay were added to the supposed echo with a 200Hz high pass filter. The sound effects were also as heavily compressed as the vocals for less dynamics and quicker loud sounds. Finally, a Maxim limiter was added to the Master channel for less dynamic range and added overall compression with a ceiling of -0.7dB and a threshold of -21.3dB with a 1ms release.
